About us

Although we have both lived in Devon for many years, when we first saw Lower Campscott Farm, we knew immediately it was a special place. Some people already knew even then: one family has just celebrated 21 consecutive years holidaying here!!

Since arriving here at Christmas 2009, we have enjoyed ourselves immensely. We love living here, but we have hardly stood still! In addition to renovating all the cottages to bring them up to modern day standards of comfort, insulation and facilities, thanks to a grant from the AONB we now have a beautiful Wild Flower meadow that bloomed for the first time this summer, giving the most fantastic display of colour.

Our Nature Reserve is proving very successful attracting insects and wildlife. This in turn attracts the songbirds. If during the spring or early summer you wake early enough to listen to the Dawn Chorus you will experience something truly unforgettable. http://www.idcd.info/

We were also able to extend our duck pond, which now attracts numerous wild ducks: we had 14 ducklings this last year, and Howard our Toulouse Goose made a very proud stepfather to them all.

All our hens, and presently we have 22 of them, are ex battery hens. We bought them through the British Hen Welfare Trust (www.bhwt.org.uk). They are all now free range, and live in comparative luxury. In return we get the best eggs we have ever tasted.

This year two of our pedigree Dexter cows have calved giving us a bull and a heifer calf, a welcome addition, and beautiful they are too.

Harvey our grey Welsh Cob and Muffin the Shetland pony remain very popular with all our visitors, young and old.

Over the coming months we want to add pigs and sheep to our other residents, giving us a true Animal Farm!

Lower Campscott Farm is set in almost 35 picturesque and tranquil acres at the head of the Fuchsia Valley which tumbles down to the picture postcard village of Lee and the sea beyond. With our nearest neighbour nearly a quarter of a mile away, the site lies in delightful seclusion down a private lane. Due to the mild maritime climate we experience here during the summer months, the farm and the surrounding area is ablaze with fuchsias, some growing wild in the hedgerows, and the local countryside is crisscrossed with public footpaths.

Lee Bay is a very special place. The small village, with many cottages dating from the 16th and 17th centuries, lies along a narrow winding lane running down to an attractive rocky cove. It’s one of those places that many people never discover.        (Source- the AA book of Britain’s Coastal Walks)

The tranquillity is magical, the views from the farm over the sea and the countryside are stunning, but we are just a few minutes’ walk from the South West Coast Path, and less than five minutes drive from both the Victorian seaside resort of Ilfracombe, the “Jewel” of the North Devon coast, and the miles of golden sandy beaches of Croyde, and Woolacombe which was voted theBest British Beach in a recent poll.

“North Devon has some of the most spectacular and varied coastal scenery in the country and wonderful seascapes. The coastal and marine life is amongst the richest in the country.”                                                                    (Source:  www.coastwisenorthdevon.co.uk)

The farm is within no less than three “Protected Landscape Designations”: the North Devon Heritage Coast, the Coastal Preservation Area, and of course the North Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Just a few short miles away, Exmoor has recently been awarded International Dark Sky Reserve status, one of only two in the World. This means that on a clear night because of the air quality and without streetlights Lower Campscott Farm has one of the best views of the constellations in the U.K.!

Visitors can also take a day trip from Ilfracombe to Lundy Island, England’s only statutory Marine Nature Reserve.

With many of North Devon’s award winning tourist attractions within easy reach there is never any shortage of things to do!
